Vertcoin suffers repeated majority-hashrate attacks
Historical retrospective compiled on 24 October 2026. Year-end retrospective covering attacks reported in late 2018, not an assertion of a 31 December attack.
Evidence: Contemporary reporting of a security researcher’s findings.
Reporting on Vertcoin’s late-2018 attacks described 22 deep chain reorganizations across several incidents, with 15 including double spending. The figures were attributed to security researcher Mark Nesbitt, whose estimate put possible theft above $100,000. The incidents demonstrated the consequences of an attacker obtaining enough mining power to replace previously accepted transaction history on a smaller proof-of-work network. The loss figure was an estimate, not a final audited accounting. This entry uses a year-end retrospective date because the finding covers a series of events; the cited article’s later update timestamp should not be mistaken for the year of the attacks.
