Pakcoin announces a new chain after reported double spending

Historical retrospective compiled on 24 October 2026. Dated to the 4 January 2019 announcement covering attacks reported from 14 December 2018.

Evidence: Project incident disclosure and migration plan.

Pakcoin’s developers reported selfish mining and double spending affecting Cryptopia deposits from 14 December 2018. In a 4 January announcement they said suspicious mining activity had prompted an emergency move to proof of stake. Because they could not implement the change on the existing chain, they announced a new chain and a one-to-one swap for holders, with a snapshot deadline specified in the notice. Their estimate of the attackers’ sales was provisional, pending exchange information. The episode links a reported security incident to a substantial network migration; the historical swap instructions are not current instructions for moving funds.
