Bitmark’s beginnings: currency combined with reputation
Historical retrospective compiled on 24 October 2026. Dated to the genesis message of 13 July 2014; project documentation places operation in July.
Evidence: Project history and design documentation.
Project Bitmark’s documentation dates its operation to July 2014 and records a genesis message dated 13 July. Its defining idea, Marking, combined cryptocurrency transfers with a reputation system: rewarding a creator could also signal the value of the creator’s work. The project describes a proof-of-work launch without a premine or token sale. This is the original Bitmark currency historically identified as BTM, and as BTMK in newer material. It is distinct from Bytom, which also uses BTM, and from the separate Bitmark Inc. digital-property registry business.
