Iceland’s central bank warns about Auroracoin risks

Historical retrospective compiled on 24 October 2026. Dated to the central bank’s statement of 19 March 2014.

Evidence: Official contemporary statement.

With public attention building ahead of Auroracoin’s distribution, Iceland’s central bank issued a warning about the risks of virtual currencies on 19 March 2014. Its statement specifically addressed Auroracoin alongside Bitcoin and explained that these instruments were not recognized currency or legal tender at that time. The intervention matters because the project’s Icelandic identity could otherwise be mistaken for official sponsorship. It was a privately initiated cryptocurrency experiment, not a central-bank currency. This account describes the historical statement and should not be read as a description of Iceland’s current legal treatment of digital assets.
